Just Take Charge!

A few months ago, I had a great conversation with one of my dearest friends here abroad.  I asked her this question, “How can I be an effective in-charge to my client engagement and my team members?”  This was the time when I was soooo frustrated about my workloads, complains about my job assignments and people I work with, feels so inferior of my responsibility (feels that I’m too young and inexperienced for my job role) and the nature of the clients I dealt with.  I am not a reklamador, so when I make ‘reklamo’, it means I’m really on my *dark side*. Smile with tongue out

My friend answered, “Do what your role tells you.  You are referred to as the ‘in-charge’, so… gurl, just take charge!!! (I just have to add those 3 exclamation points, because I really feel she was shouting at me when she said that.)

Just Take Charge
It has been 3 weeks since I am back to my work after an almost one-month vacation in the Philippines.  I had plans to be a-little-bit-of-a-slacker at work considering that I just came from my holidays, but the good heavens did not hear my plea.  On my first working day at the start of the year, I saw lots of work instructions on my desk, 3 clients assigned to me, of which 2 of them is due in two weeks time. C’mon, whooah!  And another manager from another state are also following me up to do another work (so, that makes it 4 clients. twoinks!).

Due to the new year’s atmosphere and getting enough sun from our tropical country, I got loads of weapons to fight this work+winter war and decided to stay on my positive mood.  Thumbs up

For the last 3 weeks, I changed my work attitude by:

  • being at the office 30minutes to an hour early
  • taking a 15-20 minute power nap during lunch time
  • vibrating my power smile to my work colleagues (yeah, one of our dearest personnel always call me: ‘the smiling rosie’).  Just emphasizing that I came from the City of Smiles, gotta take advantage of this. hehehe…
  • I was no longer afraid to dial the phone and speak to clients.  (Before, I always feel stupid whenever I asked them to repeat what they say because I cannot understand their British accent) Just imey-gine that you are speay-king in front of Harry Potter or Hermione every miy-nute of every dey. Keri? :p
  • Laugh my heart out loud
  • Try to appreciate the brrrreezing cold winter season

Just last week, I was able to train two persons brought under my supervision, cleared the review points of my manager, scheduled for review to two executive directors and then, work done! Wohooo! =)

I felt so accomplished.
I felt that my time and effort were all worth it.
I felt important.
Best of all, I re-discover the strengths that are inherent in me, of which I tend not to notice nor acknowledge.

My manager provided me three positive feedbacks:

  • Easy to follow documentation (Teynk u! Teynk u!) ^_^
  • Timely and effective communication of audit issues
  • Enthusiasm at work and being pro-active

He also pointed out areas for development, but he informed me that those can just easily be dealt with.  He told me to focus on my strengths, because those are skills that you cannot easily acquire – it is inherent within the person.

It felt good. Open-mouthed smile

I learned a great lesson that week: “Attitude changes everything.  You should know your weaknesses, but keep FOCUS on your strengths.”  \(“,)/

Keep learning and keep moving forward!

Cheers,
Lyn-Lyn \(“,)/
